Java3d is alive and well ------------------------
in that the capabilities it gave us yesterday
still work today, and will work tomorrow and forevermore.
Justin Couch and Yumetech.com had problems with the Sun VRML Loaders and their project to replace them with something better, but that is their problem, and not the problem of any other person or project except for those depending on Yumetech.com's projects.
Java3d developers on this list continue to create new, interesting and useful applications including one that I think is especially interesting:
Human Animation with Cloth Simulation with VRML & Java3d --------------------------------------------------------
or as I like to call it:
Dressing Room Stripper with VR Physics, VRML & Java3d ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
( when I ran it a girl modeled a dress, then she walked forward, leaving the dress behind )
here's the post that announced it:

Other than a statement on j3d.org,http://archives.java.sun.com/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0308&L=java3d-interest&P=36806
I can't find news about the subject.
Thanks,

Justin Couch / Yumetech.com's "j3d.org' site proclaims: | | | 27 July | | The final two developers working on Java3D have been sacked by Sun. | | That means there is no official support coming from them, | | and obviously no further development. | | At this point Java3D is effectively dead, | | unless the various community efforts can convince Sun | to release all or part of the source. | http://j3d.org/
Justin Couch's fraudulent, false and self serving claims ----------------------------------- have hurt our community in the past and his " java3d is effectively dead " claim is as false, self-serving and harmful as his vulgar slanderous attacks on those using Sun's VRML Loaders to animate Web3d.org's avatars in a browser for useful things like Finger Spelling for the Deaf.
Some rats are leaving the ship ... let them go, and rejoice.
Sun is developing new 3d technologies for the Java community:
they are more portable, and hopefully better tools for some tasks ...
I hope they are great successes, and as they emerge and prove themselves many of us will take advantage of their new capabilities.
But Java3d still works, it will continue to be used. ---------------------------------------------------
Java3d will continue to support our comunity, as we support each other, using whatever tool works best.
There is __ NO __ promise that it's capabilities will be extended.
But if it's current capabilities are "good enough" for your task, then it will get the job done if you know how to use it.
As with anything, the success of any project is highly dependent on the skills and wisdom of the craftsman - developer including his choice of tools.
And a good craftsman never blames his tools.
I use multiple methods to 3d with Java:
Java3d with VRML for speed where it is supported, Java and VRML without Java3d with either the shout3d.com 3d engine or my own custom engine that are portable across Windows, Linux, Solaris, ___ and Apple's Macintosh ___ and other portable devices.
Nasa, I & others use Java3d with the Sun VRML Loaders:
Java3d works great with the Sun VRML Loaders -------------------------------------------- | http://www.frontiernet.net/~imaging/vrml_loaders_working.html http://fastscript3d.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery.html http://www.frontiernet.net/~imaging/terrain_rendering.html
Choose your tools wisely.
3d Animation on the web works with Java: Today & forevermore.
