what I read from your interpretation, Justin, is, that Sun is so busy with
their internal politics that there is just no time or energy left for them to
deal with all that "community" or "customers" in the "outside world". not the
best state for a company to be in.
in fact, bigger or smaller companies are known for those self-numbening
states. that's really when open communities can show their strengths - by
simply starting off and taking over. and that's what is happening right now.
funny enough, in java.net, Sun itself established the workplace for all that.
being very disappointed at first, I must now say, that maybe this is really a
good starting point to develop the Java 3D libraries which are needed
following the open source development approach.
but remember, the mozilla people took over the Navigator sources and had to
basically throw it all away and start over. getting the Java3D sources may
not automatically be something an open community would like to go with.
directed to Sun: you are loosing a great deal of influence when turning away
from actively supporting these technologies. for example: while Java3D is now
widely used for scientific visualisations, in the future, Sun as a hardware
and OS seller will no longer be of any interest in those academic fields.
it seems to me that most of the people on this list are doing this 3D stuff
anyway, whatever company is behind or not behind them.
but if Sun was open-minded and communicating, they would profit from being a
part.
the entertainment and mobile market is growing - so a company can generate
revenue here. and with all those massive server-based gaming environments
which will evolve over the next years, Sun really delivers the technologies
for that: Java, J2EE, Server OS+HW.
