Okay. No one has said that we have dropped support for Java 3D. And, we have made no suggestion that we are end of lifeing the product either. We will support Java 3D. It is true that people working on Java 3D were layed off. And, some of what Justin wrote was true - but not nearly all of it. There is a lot of assumtions and conjecture in his assesment.
Once again. We are working on plans to allow for the continual enhancement of Java 3D in some fashion. We have nothing to announce yet, because those plans are not finalized. There are enough rumors being passed around, that we are not about to promise something when we are not prepared to deliver it. We read all of the opinions expressed here and on javagaming.org. They are very interesting and helpfull.
When the plans are finalized, this community will be the first to know. I really hope that we can make some announcements very soon.

I agree with Bernd. Like most shops, the one I manage is a mix of java and Microsoft C++. Although we do not design game software, I am still concerned about Sun's decision to drop an API because they can't compete against their rivals. I understand that a company must at times cut non profitable projects in order to stay in business. However, Sun's silence only makes me wonder what they will drop next. Perhaps jdbc or comm? It also makes me think twice before considering Sun for my next hardware purchase.
Before someone outside of the community dismisses this post as just another hobbyist programmer upset about learning another API, I assure you that learning new APIs is part of a developers job. I am just being practical. Those of us who develop code for a living and have had to integrate new libraries into our current baselines understand this.
I don't know if anyone from Sun will ever read this. I have already reinstalled my Visual Studio and started cranking out DirectX code. Tomorrow I will also contact my vendor about alternatives to Sun stations.
Again, I am just being practical.
