All,

Being a new member of this list, this is pretty disheartening news, to say the least.

On the other hand, this could be an opportunity for the Open Source community
to lend a hand, working with the folks from Sun who are knowledgeable about
the 3D packages and go beyond 1.4.

I guess the questions to be asked first would be: Why is Sun putting this set of
API's on the back burner? Perhaps they see that the basic packages are there
and are looking for third party or open source folks to fill in the gaps. Just a hunch.

Perhaps someone from Sun could fill us in.

Thanks.

Just don't hold your breath, it has been said and confirmed by people from
SUN that java3d is 'in a holding pattern', a number of people have pointed
out that previous projects that have entered such a holding patern never
emerge from it. On the other hand it has been said by Doug (i think it was
doug) that java 3d will emerge, but he can't say when or in what form
because it hadn't been decided, which sounds like it's years away, when/if
it starts to move again.
