another idea is that you take the .ai format direct and load it into a
3d-modeller and afterwards exporting it into any desired 3d-format.
e.g. wings3d will do this, but it will not load the ai>version 9 or 8

I stumbled across Wings3D, but on both versions I tried, it won't load anything I've exported -- It thinks for a while and then gives me an "AI import internal error". (I have Adobe Illustrator CS, but it allows you to save for older versions; I've needed to do this a few times when working with a friend who uses an older version.)

if possible, simplify your paths and delete possible rasterimages inside
then save as illu7...thats the way how it worked with a job of mine...
but not with all...however...so I 'm greed to read about another
free-modeller which is able to convert ai-files - maybe in a better way...

Anyone know of any other (preferably free/low-cost) modelers that can read in AI or
SVG?
