Android 2 now features sync providers, i.e. there's nothing to stop you from developing a private or for that matter, commercial cloud based sync center alternative to Google. This is of course at the very root of Android, everything is replaceable/augmentable [http:// i48.tinypic.com/2rcvlg6.jpg].
