I live in a bubble. In the Washington, D.C. area. I work in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), developing custom web applications with your typical technology stack, Java in the backend and flex, javascript, html, etc. on the front end. In this area that type of job has a 100% occupancy rate, in most cases these jobs are for the federal government. We have been looking for someone in my field for over eight months, and have not hired yet because it is so hard to find qualified candidates.
So I guess it depends on where you are and what you do. I do share some of the pessimism about the economic situation although I don´t see it on a daily basis at all, and things seem to be improving a bit (very slowly). But you also have to consider that many countries would swap their situation for the western "troubles". Living in the UK, US, Europe, etc. is not only not a bad thing, it is great and we have to remind ourselves how lucky we are to be thinking about career fulfillment instead of putting food on the table. I am from Spain, the next candidate for a credit default after Greece. If that happens, it could bring down the whole world´s economic recovery since it is "too big to fail" (8th or 9th largest world economy). The "too big to fail" is a free pass for socialist politicians that love to subsidize a large portion of the electorate to guarantee a captive vote in the next elections. Sad, very sad, and even though my family, friends and roots are there I do not see my return any time soon. So yes, opportunity is just about everywhere these days, and we have to be open minded, for the world is a very large place and there are opportunities everywhere. If I have learned something through this experience is that no place is better than other, it will always depend on your personal situation. Learning new skills, languages, cultures, etc. makes you not only a more flexible (=better) professional but also enriches you as a person. I do encourage people to move around, it is one of the problems we have in Europe, much is said about the EU but people don´t move that much (I have never heard a Spaniard express desire to go live in, say, Sweden; it could be because of the weather).
