I think one thing is clear, The mentality of Oracle is going to be
very detrimental to the popularity of Java. Many big corporations may
stick with it but I think the developers who may have once been
attracted by the openness and culture are not going to feel loyal. Or
maybe that is just how I feel right now. If Academia decides that Java
is no longer the best choice for teaching that could eventually really
hurt the Java world.

I think the demise could be quite quick if there was an obvious
alternative to run to. I don't think the kind of people who dislike
how Oracle do business are going to run to .Net. I don't think the
people who like the Microsoft way of doing things are going to be
attracted to Java (given C# has more features as a language).

I wish I knew what the correct response was to the current situation.
The irony is that I am more likely to spend some time with C++ which
many consider to be a dying platform too.
