Thanks for getting back to me.
What I'm doing is making a check book with the columns
A. check number, B cancel, C. date, D who to, E. payment, F deposit, G.
balance, and cell h3 is the forward balance from last month.
All this is in row 2, and the first row to write in should be row 4.
I don't know how to write the formula in a blank excel table.

Where are you deducting the payment to ?

Would be glad to help, but are not sure what you're trying to do. E.g.,
what is balance forward? What is pay to? If you can describe in words
what you are trying to do, I can easily translate that into a formula for
you.

I'm trying to figure out how to write a formula with excel 2003, but every
time I do, I'm doing something wrong.
Here is what I want.
In cell h3 should be the balance forward, e4 should be payment to, f4

Can some one tell me the steps on writing a formula?
