And there really are single-port routers, so obviously, the router 
manufacturers expect to sell them to people with only a single system. 
However, even if I had only one computer now, I'd still pay the very small 
difference and get a four-port model for, as you indicated, future 
expandability.

I don't believe that they make wireless modems.  There is no reason that a 
person couldn't use a router for just 1 computer, it's called planning 
ahead.  Actually I also read that description of a traffic cop some where 
quite a while ago myself, but it is very accurate detailing what those 
things are used for.  The only reason I jumped in at all on this thread was 
to make sure the lady knew if she needed such an animal or not. Your post 
was right on target, good job.
