GAIM is a clone of AIM with a difference of one
letter. I don't think that a software product and a
company with similar names (as opposed to the same
name as is now the case) is as serious an
infringement. 

I actually think that there is more chance for
confusion with J2EE and JDEE (similar to how people
are confused by JNI and JINI or JavaBeans and
Enterprise Java beans) than with the J.D. Edwards
firm. 

I half considered submitting this to Slashdot or
kuro5hin until I realized that it could become a storm
in a teacup and Paul is better of just picking a new
name. 

I'd go for anything with Emacs in the name, e.g. EJE
or EmacsJDE.
