This mornings update, after letting the router cool down: The newer SBC still won't connect. It has briefly connected once or twice, so is now automatically trying to connect to the right network. Sometimes the status indicator at the bottom of the screen shows white, but it quickly switches back to red. The router shows an IP address for it, but pinging fails.
The older SBC was working perfectly for an hour or so this morning. Now it seems to connect to the wireless network but has difficulty finding the squeezebox (or the server). It's got an IP address, but pinging it drops 80-90% of packets.
