That ipod way doesn't sound so bad either. To my mind you shouldn't have to go all the way through the menus (and back) to change shuffle mode.
The Rockbox software on my old iRiver H140 does it this way. When you press and hold a certain button you go to a quick settings page where you can change shuffle/repeat settings quicly. Pressing the same button again takes you back, straight to what you were doing. Thing is, I'm not sure there are any unused buttons left on the Controller, but perhaps someone else has an idea...?
