OK, so if it is necessary to use

  á

then we still have problems with regard to marking. You are saying that any
GT expressions headed toward HTML must be escaped in this HTML-only sort of
way. We are not set up to make such a distinction in the translations.

So, if this really is the only way, then, Jonathan, you are right, we have
to tag those. The style "hidden" is not going to do it. But

<span> </span>

might. If that is in the GT expression, then the translator will see that
and, presumably, know to use this mechanism. It isn't great, because it is
nonstandard, but it seems the only alternative.

Somehow, though, the page title has to be put in correctly, and I don't see
that as being appropriately done using this mechanism. The user is typing
it. Do we really expect novice users to know the &....; codes? Or to know to
enter those in the entry box? I suppose we could scan the input in Jmol for
characters outside the standard Latin set, and send up an alert, but I
suggest that only as a last resort.

I still don't understand why specifying UTF-8 on the web page does not work.
I'd like more evidence that &...; codes really are necessary.

Let's still find out if there is a UTF-8 solution. Are there any examples of
web pages using UTF-8 encoding that work?

Bob
