Supposedly quoting directly from a high
ranking Sun official... I'm still
not sure I believe it though.

Now, according to this article:

http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/0604sunnode.html

Sun are saying that it's still up in the air.
That is, they don't come right out and say
they are NOT going to open source Java,
but they say "no decision has been made yet."

I would guess that there is considerable internal
debate at Sun about this very issue... Obviously
it's not a cut and dry thing, where one choice
or the other is obviously correct.

I'm ambivalent about it myself, if for no
other reason than the fact that there are
*already* FOSS implementations of Java
compilers, VM's and Class Libraries.

Which brings to mind an interesting point...
if IBM wants Open Source Java so bad, why
don't they either:

1. open source their own JDK

or

2. contribute to projects like GNU Classpath, GCJ, Kaffe, SableVM, etc.?

TTYL,

Phil

When the 1st Amendment no longer protects your voice.
And when the 4th Amendment no longer protects your privacy or your stuff.
Thank God we have the 2nd Amendment to tell our elected representatives that enough is enough.
It's time to put "... from my cold, dead hands" back where it belongs.
