I'd be interested in hearing what you concluded. I've been using
dotster for a long time, but there seem to be some problems with their
agreement that would allow them to disable domains. I suspect this is
becoming a part of several different registars agreements.
Here's the relevant part from dotster's agreement.
11.2 Right to Disable Account or Domain. If you send Unsolicited
Email and/or are listed on a public database (i.e. SpamHaus), Dotster
reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to immediately disable any
domain or user account that allegedly sent such unsolicited email(s)
in order to forestall further abuse or damage to email systems.
Unsolicited Email sent from other networks that reference email
accounts of domains registered by Dotster shall be considered to have
originated from the account referenced, unless compelling reasons are
provided to Dotster, such that Dotster believes that the Unsolicited
Email originated with an unrelated third party.
My understanding is that a similar clause in GoDaddy's agreement has
been used to shut off domains. I've not read GoDaddy's agreement, but
it seems they haven't been giving sufficient warning. In the case of
sec-list, that you mentioned, the warning was 42 minutes, I think.
However, dotster states
11.3 Single complaint of Unsolicited Email. If Dotster, Inc.
receives a complaint regarding Unsolicited Email, Dotster, Inc. will
reasonably investigate the claim by, among other things, contacting
the administrative contact and/or the account owner of the domain at
the listed email address. If there is no response within five (5) days
of our request, Dotster, Inc. will, in its discretion, take such
action as it deems warranted
So they will give warning. Make sure your contact information is kept
up to date. If you don't get the email warning of the impending
shutdown, you may find yourself disconnected without warning.
