A friend of mine who shall go nameless has a laptop he used at work that
is going to be replaced. An IBM of recent vintage. His employer wishes to
remove the perfectly good hard drive and crush it for reasons that shall
go unstated. He could keep the rest. He asked me how much it would cost to
have a new HD put in to it, and I was pessimistic that it could be done
reasonably, because all my laptop update questions would have cost 75% of
a new one.

If he has a screwdriver, he could do it for the cost of the disk. All he needs to do is find out if the disk is PATA or SATA, buy the appropriate device, then install it in the carrier which holds the disk. He will have removed the disk from this carrier in order to hand it to the moron doing the destruction.
