A friend of mine who shall go nameless has a laptop he used at work that

a new one.

Any suggestions?

Probably about $100-$150 for a new drive and $50 or so in labor to replace the drive. Hard drives generally are made to be pretty easy to replace (exception: Apple) and their connectors are standard.

The only thing to watch out for is that it might have some kind of proprietary adapter which changes from parallel ATA to a hot-swappable edge connection (Dell has this). The best way to check is to pull the drive and scarf the connector if it has one.
