XO users, I had tried previous candidates with little luck but after a couple of
hours on 703, I can say it looks pretty good/stable.

I'm not sure if you need a developers key for this or not since I have one and
it just worked. The page noting the release:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Update_1

Here is what is needed to install the update and what I did:

0) get on a stable network

1) go to console( ctl-alt-f1 or ctl-alt-neighborhood ) and login as root
#olpc-update candidate-703
wait about 20 minutes until you see the empty "#" prompt

2) on another machine, get the G1-G1 activity bundle in a zip file and
expand it on the root of a vfat formated USB drive/stick.
3) after the XO update is complete, shutdown the XO and install
the USB stick, hold the "X" game button down and push the power button.
You will be told to let the "X" button go and it will then install your
activities
from the USB stick onto your XO and then turn itself off.
4) remove the USB stick and boot the XO

here's the activity bundle download page( it's a zip file ):
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/G1G1_Activity_Pack

The reason for this activity bundle install is because the updates now contain
only the base OS and no activities. They do this so that it is easier to get
factory
installations and then add customizations via activity bundles based on the
needs of
the group receiving the XO.

My personally added activities persisted the upgrade but all the standard G1-G1
activities were gone on the update but restored on activity bundle install.

PS, I installed Xubuntu on an SD card and it looks pretty good but with some
warts.
Wireless worked, easy hack fixed touchpad querk, other hacks used to control
backlight. Reasonable fast off a 15MB/s 2GB SanDisk Ultra II from Costco. And
really thinking getting going on some Python coding will be helpful.
