I guess you're not aware of realtime extensions to Linux. Still, I've not 
checked up on this recently and they could have very well went with
something like Vertex, QNX, or other hardcore RTOS. Then again,
some are using Linux in mil spec aviation so don't count generic Linux
as the only way to use Linux for realtime applications. IIRC, LynuxWorks
is the one who had their stuff validated and used. There's alot of 
Linux getting used in embedded mil-type hardware. There are lots
of options available depending on how 'real time' you need to be.
