this ABI compatibility is probably what VxWorks does too. It keeps the
hardcore RTOS under all the open source goodies the rest of what
GNU provides which make it's use advantageous.

I have read of various hardcore RT patches where RT code is scheduled
before any nonRT tasks so it's still the Linux kernel but with a form of
RT subsystem keeping really close to the metal. But we know that there
are many different needs while they all get lumped in the RT bucket.

As far as I-Drive goes, I've heard it does control throttle and on/off 
functions of the engine but I would doubt it's doing injector timing and
the likes.
