However, I will withhold judgement until I get some more information. John is talking to some SDMUG folks, so I'll wait before kicking off an email.

I can certainly seem some reasons for SDMUG to just decide to go it alone. Money management being a big one. I imagine that group has quite a wad of cash tucked away. Usage of that cash probably has strictures with SDCS.

I would, however, probably request a full accounting of all SDMUG assets to SDCS before the secession. That is probably required as due diligence for the current board members (including the SDMUG ones).
