I'm used to doing conversions in the other direction, so that I can knit/crochet US patterns using yarn bought in UK sizes. For my tension converting a sport weight yarn to a UK double knit works. Double knit is fatter than 4 ply, so maybe you do need something finer. I have made lace (in a Jane Atkinson class) using threads of double knit thickness. The yarn fills up the bobbins very quickly, so huge bobbins are needed to get any decent amount on to make a piece of any size like a scarf. -- The problem with reality is the lack of background music.
