metallic threads just don't work. Most modern metallic threads have
no metal in them, and are too fine in diameter.
Most modern metallic threads are made from polyester coated aluminium
foil. Aluminium *IS* metal.
I do agree with you that those threads are not the same as traditional
gold or silver threads.
They are just not the
correct weight. It also doesn't work to double up on the thread -
still doesn't look right and is a real pain to work. The heavier
"metallic" threads have a tendency to "fracture", producing a faceted
effect when pulled up. Then there is the shredding........
Some modern threads are flat strips of metallised polyester, others are
combined with rayon, polyester or silk in various ways -
spinning/plying, binding, chaining, braiding, knitting and wrapping.
Nothing quite like the purl thread used for goldwork embroidery, but
the wrapped threads are similar in construction to passing thread in
that the metal/metallised polyester is wrapped around a silk or
polyester core. Most modern wrapped threads are fairly fine but there
are a few thicker ones.
