The 4 field convention is not exclusively American. For example: my father was born in Dubeczno, Wlodawa, Lubelskie, Poland.
I realize that Ireland and England are countries, but because my family is predominately Eastern Europe/Russia/Germany and United States, those family members of mine born and living in England and Ireland will remain as Legacy (and Ancestry) has them, with UK as the country. If you NEVER plan to have your database merged and and never plan to search on one of the four fields, I guess it doesn't matter how you enter locations. The databases I work with will eventually be merged and will need to be consistent with the newer standards for entering locations. I have always resisted the temptation to record locations incorrectly just so that they fit in with this artificial simplification not designed for us. Indeed, I have written blogs advising those who do not understand British conventions just how to enter them. Rarely do I need to use the geo-locator, and when I do I add UK at the end, I delete it as soon as I have finished. The mapping works fine when using our convention, but better if the street is included and uses the Bing mapping index. I have also found it much better to set the Location List to read from right to left when street names are included (Master List>Location>Sort - and also check the box on the left of the Sort button. I dont think my Grandad would be impressed with Scotland being demoted from Country to State - but that can be our secret .....
