There is another use of the preferred child. In the pedigree view, when you click the arrow on the left to go down one generation, you go to the preferred child. If you have set up the database to show direct line as preferred, you can go down the generations back to you. If not, and the first child is preferred, you soon run out of your line, and if your memory is no better than mine, you cannot remember which child of your 7 ggfather is your ancestor.
On the family view, click to the left of the box listing the children, you move the preferred child up to the husband/wife position. Hover your mouse in the right space and a pop-up message tells you what a click will do. Legacy has many neat capabilities.
