Cathy, If one is working (or potentially working) on the same records, I think it's a bit more complicated than that. Let's take the situation where at the beginning two computers have identical copies of the family file.
Let's say User 1 modifies the birth date of someone. While User 1 still has their file open (and hence it has not been uploaded/synced with the Dropbox server), User 2 opens the file and modifies the death date of the same person. User 1 closes Legacy, then sometime later User 2 closes Legacy. User 2's Dropbox file would have the latest timestamp and would have the updated death date, but it's birth date would be the original one, effectively overwriting User 1's change. Simultaneous access to databases requires 'record locking' to ensure that individual records (and any collateral records such as indexes) can only be updated by a single person at a time. That's beyond what either Dropbox or Legacy was designed to do. If multiple users are always working on different records, you might get away without problems. But, it's dangerous and the chance of losing updates is quite real. When you next go online, two files will be downloaded to your computer and you can view them both so as to decide which you want to use. However, if you think that other family members will be using the one file at different times, Dropbox can work quite well. You can see some of their features on the following web page: https://www.dropbox.com/features Cathy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brian/Support" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, April 17, 2011 5:22 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] how to do coordinating with family matching to my data to new.familysearch.org > Cathy, > > How does Drop Box handle the simultaneous use of the same file by more > than one user?
