If you want to transfer all of your Legacy information to another computer, always use the backup to zip files on the original computer and then restore family file on the target computer. The media files will backup to another zip file. To restore media to the target computer, you simply unzip all to the C:\ directory and the unzip will lay down the media files in the same structure they had when the backup was made. If not and you've got Legacy 7, then you're out of luck. You can go from 7 to 8 but not backwards in the opposite direction. You say you've got the data on the USB drive - but in which format? Legacy Backup (ie ZIP file) or Legacy Family File (FDB file). There is a very distinct difference. Assuming the first stumbling block isn't, then if the USB is showing up in the Windows part of the laptop, your problems come down to terminology. "Import" is generally for getting non-Legacy data into an existing Legacy file. If you're trying to read a GED file, then you should first create a new, empty family file, then import the foreign data.
