Thanks Kathy and Wes again, I have so much to learn about all this, the Zip
file method seemed to work the best, I did actually get it to work! But it was
a process. . .I couldn't get the first flash drive to work and I kept getting
error messages like "windows generic error" or didn't recognize the file. . or
maybe user 101 lacking knowing how to work in windows w/ vm fusion, the file
pathways seems different. So I saved the fdb file to a different flash drive
and at least it loaded the data correctly! I don't have any media attached
because I haven't gotten that far into learning Legacy and I think I won't
because it seems too confusing and problematic from everyone's discussions
about it here; will likely use your idea Cathy on that.

But now I have these concerns:

I may have confused myself and hope I can describe what I remember was the
sequence of events as I was trying to do this in the car:

there may be 2 different issues here, one related to the VM fusion/Windows
combo, the other a Legacy question

I first mistakenly I think saved the file just w/o picking a particular folder
because I thought that Legacy automatically saved it to the default folder. But
then I couldn't find the file listed anywhere on the computer so was worried
that I'd just resaved it on the E flash drive, so I did a "save as" to make
sure it was on the computer, and thus put it in C drive to make sure I didn't
lose it when I took out the flash drive. So all seemed ok until I tried to do a
backup. I ended up with 2 files, different names, but the same Legacy data.

Initially, the first time I tried to back up my data, I got a message that the
VM system basically didn't understand the pathway to Legacy I guess. It asked
me 2 choices to override the pathway problem, and after playing around with it,
I think I finally picked the right one. Then I went back to enter more data and
all of a sudden I was entering data in a different file than the one I had
labeled for C drive. So then I went to go find the original file I had been
working in, some how I got a request to do an "extraction" of the (zip) file I
guess, so I thought that was well and good thinking I'd missed that part
before. . .but then I'd lost the new data I had put in, not sure if it was in
the other file or just lost the data because of the extraction. . .anyway, it
was then I realized that it was asking me to backup BOTH files and perform
double backups, PLUS I noticed also that there was a separate backup for the
media files. Now I see to read carefully which file I'm backing up to, but that
leads me to these questions:

1. Shouldn't I be seeing an uncompressed file as a working file for entering
data? How do I fix this if I should be using an uncompressed file? Or am I
confused about how these are labeled?
2. Is it normal to not find Legacy files when doing a search; and only be able
to find them within Legacy?
3. How do I get rid of the second file so I don't have to specify which file
I'm backing up?
4. Should I uncheck "backup Media files" for now since I'm not attaching media?
5. Should I try to move the file to a different location, would that help
Legacy find the file easier?

Obviously, I'm a little tech challenged, so hopefully someone can understand
what I wrote and make sense of this and know how to answer. I'm sure I'll get a
better mental picture of how this works in time, but just want to know if I
should change something at this point to I don't have trouble with ending up
adding data to the wrong program.

Thanks so much for all your patience and great explanations! Pam

I didn't see a response to your last e-mail so I'll give it a shot.
Hopefully this will get to you in time.

I would use a zip file (Legacy Backup) to transfer the files to the
thumb drive. That way you get everything that is needed.

When you open the Legacy on your laptop, you can do a restore. then you
ca open the family file in the usual way.

Hope this helps.

Wes
