My guess would be Grandfather, Grandmother are in the same generation as
Grand Uncle.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Greatuncle vs Granduncle
I've always used the term Greatuncle when referring to my Mother's Uncle.
Legacy uses Granduncle. The dictionary uses Greatuncle as the first term,
and Granduncle as the second term in defining my Mother's Uncle.
Is there some reason Legacy uses Grand instead of Great?
