Interesting idea - a good excuse, better than / more likely to be allowed than a pop-up that just asks for permission to report usage. Not sure it could be automated - the update installation part - it would certainly be possible to simply check for newer versions and report status. I guess you could check both releases and bzr revision numbers. It could just be a page which lists current version and explains update options (snapshot, etc.).
