Edgar, I'd suggest trying jhalfs. It is really a tool for
developers, but it's not that hard to use. You need subversion and
the tools uses to build the book (libxml2, libxslt, DocBook, and
tidy). If you need help getting it to run properly, I'll be glad to
help.
If there is an issue with our instructions, we need to be able to
reproduce the problem, but right now, I am unable to do that. Of
course the problem may be a difference in HW, but using jhalfs would
isolate the HW from the book's instructions.
Hallo Bruce,
in the meantime I made a second trial. I started on the same machine
from another host, this time a sysinit system and I new formated ( xfs
) the partition to be created. I got an identical error as reported in
my first mail: at the beginning of chapter 6, entering the command
make mrproper on linux-4.6.2. I was extremly carefull, so I can
exclude any error in my proceeding. Either the HW is the problem, or
the 32 bit system.
As a third trial I shall see to use jhalfs, as proposed. But as my
final goal is to compile kde framwork, I would also appreciate someone
sending me the ready-to-run _LFS_ version needed for it.
Thank you very much, yes, and sorry for the bad news,

Actually, what version of LFS were you building? SVN?
The place where /tools/ is added before /lib is in 5.10, GCC Pass 2. it
is the long sequence of instructions starting with "for file in". Have
you pasted those instructions from the book, or did you recopy them by
hand? Make sure you have the line
----------------
sed -e 's@/lib\(64\)\?\(32\)\?/ld@/tools&@g'
----------------
right. If you have just the slightest typo, the files are not modified
(and there is no warning...).
