Cory,, these folks were forced to leave their lands and live in a state if imprisonment by this government. They had everything they needed before this happened, and nothing they needed after it happened. In exchange, they were promised enough to obtain the necessities of life. The government got to redistribute their lands, and private owners made profit on the resources and raw materials on those lands. The Ute only got hungry.
The government made a binding contract with them. Now, you want to see this dissolved. It that fair to the Ute who still do not have their lands back?...the choicest pieces of which are under Dept of Forestry and BLM jurisdiction or part of the oil fields now owned by others? Tell me, is it moral to break a legal agreement because, today, people like you do not find it 'moral' to have taxes taken out of their pay to carry it out? It is YOUR government Cory...yours and mine. The people gave the Government this authority. You seem much more concerned with your tax money than you are about the law and the lives of people depending on this legal agreement being honored. That is the bottom line....it is legal and binding. The article was not about tax money being used for anything. It was about the surprising news that a group of Native American children had done something on their own that their parents were unable to do....start a successful business that now employs people, AND turn a handsome profit. The initial start up costs were donated by a grant from a corperation. The rest was their own sweet. Cory, if you sincerely believe this deal was illegal, or is non-binding, or is against some law of morality, then the only way to set it right is to return those lands to the Ute OR COMPARABLE LANDS....OR compensate them for the loss in today's land value.....NOT in the 1850 price of $10 an acre (which the gov't likes to quote so much) and let them fend for themselves. They are independent nations conquered by the US government, and this idea of most people here amounts to abandonment and robbery. The Government and private citizens made huge profits on this land, an advantage to every American. The Uranium deposits mined in Utah were tremendously profitable, the oil and gas wells are still producing, the coal deposits of Utah are huge.....all that has gone into the pockets on Americans and more than paid for anything given to the Ute. The taxes paid to the Federal Gov't cover the money spent on the Ute for the next 500 years. There is no 'loss' from your pocket or anyone else. The Ute traditional lands not only pay for this, they put money in the federal treasury that reduces YOUR tax...that is until recently when Bush emptied out the treasury, strapped you and your grand kids with a huge debt, and made sure his favorite companies made a killing of obscene proportions while doing so. SO tell me how it all stacks up Cory. Cut the Ute loose and give them back their lands and repay them for the raw materials we took from under them or continue on? So you tell me.....what do we do? Cut them off and return these lands? Or keep this pittance coming through that allows them to eat. ps....you stated..." Government should not be in the business of redistributing wealth, no matter how worthy the cause." Cory, "should"...and "is"...they are two different things. The government IS in the business of redistributing wealth....they are taking OUR wealth and giving it to corperate giants like Haliburten. You are missing the forest through the trees.
