, I did not make any promises, the federal government did, I was not
alive then, my great grandparents where alive durning the last major
agrrement with the tribe in the early 1900s but they had very little
say so with what was decided in DC and I probally have even less say
so today but I will call Zack WAmp my Congressman for the 3rd
district in Tennessee and try to call Senators Frisk and Alexander to
tell them the government must live up to its agreement with the
people at White Mesa. Not knowing the deatils of course but personally
I think it would probably be better to give money directly to tribal
members for the governments promise rather than programs supplied by
the government or charity group, Maybe as much as 1 million dollars
each, if there are 2,000 members that is 2 billion dollars (I Think
the government has enough assets to pay
that).
One possible thing I think the tribe may need is legal help to
carry out lawsuits. I think some of the wealthy tribes can help with
the expense there, Vine Deloria jr and Clifford Lytle in their book
American Indians, American Justice mentions a couple of Indian legal
aid groups which might provide basic research and maybe even help
with all the legal work but it may pay to go with a trial lawyer law
firm that has won several cases which may be willing to either go pro
bono or cut their fee if they win, even if they only get 500
million , cutting the fee from the usual 30% to 40% down to only
10% would still give the firm 50 million dollars, that would leave
225,000 dollars for each tribal member, even if they put that in an
interest bearing account drawing 5% each would get 11,250 dollars or
45,000 for a family of 4 which is still below the median income level
for a family of 4 but is still 2.5 times the poverty level. if they
could get the 2 billion a 10% fee would give the firm 200 million
dollars, the tribe 1.8
billion..
