In response to Tom Knapp -- I can't speak to how experienced with LP activities most of the attendees were. Most of them were new faces to me, and I attended the last two national conventions. My impression was that while there was a core of old hands, most were relatively new and not people who think having a platform or what it says is all that important. As many said, "No one reads it, anyway." Most were focused on electing officials and platforms were not high on their list of priorities for doing that. Don't be surprised that few if any, even the old hands, remembered most of the planks. Even the ones who seem to think a platform is important are quick to forget what is in it if they don't re-read it. The then chairman, Michael Dixon, admitted while serving as Chair that he couldn't remember what it contains in any detail. I must admit that includes me, and I have read the platform several times. How many people read the Ten Commandments, and can quote what they contain? Or the Bill of Rights? They might be able to reel off the names of all the actors in a TV program or movie, but most treat civic material as though they were dictionaries or telephone books, to be looked up when needed but not remembered.
