1) HP M820E. PCMCIA SCSI adapter to external HP CD-RW drive. Works fine at the 4x4x20 rated speed on the L110 under Windows 98SE and DOS. No problems burning at full 4x speed and works fine ripping audio to HD. No buffer-underrun protection. Compact, light. External AC adapter. 2) Sony CDRW52. PCMCIA ATA adapter to external CD-RW drive (inside is a standard Matushita 8xWhatever CD-RW drive). Buffer underrun at 8x on most burns; straight ISO image burns work okay. No built-in buffer underrun protection. Works fine. Heavier than the above, but very compact. External AC Adapter. 3) Sony CRX85A. PCMCIA ATA adapter to external CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive. 20x burning works fine albeit with buffer underruns that don't affect burns due to built-in buffer underrun protection. Burns faster than straight 8x burn w/o buffer underrun, so the data feed burst rates are fast enough to keep the drive happy at faster speeds. DVD playback with WinDVD,etc. isn't fast enough to keep up with full frame rate playback at any size; VCD discs play back perfectly. You'll have to buy a Margi DVD-TO-GO card to obtain full speed DVD playbacks with this unit. Lighter than both above, external AC adapter. Haven't tested under DOS yet; will try later. --- Of these drives, the HP M820E is the sure thing - works fine under all OSs and does the job w/o a hitch. (The Ricoh model it is based on is identical, except silver in color and works the same.) Standard SCSI plug on the drive means you can hook it up to any desktop with SCSI card as well. The Sony CDRW52A is an expensive pick - even used off ebay.com, and adds nothing since not even the L110 can burn 8x all the time with this drive. The CDRW52A case and PCMCIA adapter may be a find for anyone who can get faster standard laptop CD-RW drives cheap - believe you can simply swap the 8x for a faster 20x+ and it'll work just the same off the PCMCIA adapter. The CRX85A is my current favorite - fast, reliable 20x burns, fast read speeds, borderline useable DVD playback (jerky, but still...), and super-light and compact. Once I've tested and checked out DOS support for the CDX85A, the rest will probably go. Believe that the EXP CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo that is selling off EXP's website and www.ebay.com may very well be the best buy for the Libretto. Fast 20x burns, buffer underrun protection, and NO external power supply required (supposidly - don't know if anyone has one to test with the Libretto, but is supposed to work fine with all laptops according to EXP), and DOS/Windows drivers. Haven't had the time or desire to get around to testing this yet, but should be the best choice for any Libretto at a good price. david =) ===== adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
