The sustained transfer rate on the Libretto can easily push over 8x over the PCMCIA card, but the instantaneous transfer rate at any particular time may go below 8x, especially when the Libretto is reading the next file to burn to the disc. As a result, when the data rate drops below 8x, the CDRW52A will stop burning and a buffer underrun will occur as well as a bad disc. It doesn't have buffer under run protection! The CRX85A, on the other hand, does have it, so it doesn't mind - it will simply pause and wait until the Libretto can catch up again, and then continue burning w/o any problems at all. Thus, the important thing to keep in mind is to buy a CD-RW drive with buffer underrun protection if you're trying to burn faster than 4x on the Libretto, and even if you're burning slower, it's still nice to have so you can safely multitask w/o worry about a bad disc burn. The CRX85A is a bit 'scary' sounding at first however - at 24x read speeds off the disc, it sounds much like a mini-tornado whirling away and you really do wonder if you should be so close to the drive. But it's a champ and it reads just fine even as noisy as it gets at full 24x read speed. --- Found out it does have included DOS drivers, too. ===== adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
