As a result of this re-(dis)-organization, I find that I use the

printed documentation very little.
Hi James,
thanks for the info.
I've never heard anyone speaking of the printed manuals, therefore I
asked.
I used the printed books from version to version less, therefore I
don't think, that for someone like me, who 'lives' in lingo it is of
advantage to shelve out the money (in the first years I also bought a
lot of books, which are not catching dust in the shelve).
I don't think, that it was a bad idea to save the paper of printed
manuals for people like me, while I think, that for a beginner (or
even intermediate) it is one of the *values* you used to get, when
purchasing software vs. downloading *from somewhere*.
I think it is somewhat contradictionary to remove the printed manuals
in the same release, when the activation is introduced.
As I already said, it is a good idea to save the paper and resources
for people like me, who put the thing in the shelve or even leave it
in the box, but the beginner, who is obliged to go through the
activation stuff, I think it would have been a better gesture to
leave the manuals as they were and send them after registration for
the postage costs only.
it now looks like as if the software company doesn't care much about
the customer, but rather is only interested in getting so much money
as possible.
but at least, they didn't sell the same books, which used to be
included :-)
(even, if the enhencements are weak instead of just fixing the errors
and lame example snippets)
