I think perhaps what Irv meant might be:

property pEndMilliseconds

on beginSprite me
    nMilliseconds = 500  -- the number of milliseconds over which to fade
    sound(1).fadeout(nMilliseconds)  -- start fading channel 1
    pEndMilliseconds = the milliseconds + nMilliseconds  --
millisconds when you want to stop
end

on exitFrame me
    if the milliseconds >= pEndMilliseconds then
      halt
    else
      go to the frame
    end if
end

(I've added an 'else' statement in the exitFrame handler, as well as the
'me' parameter to the handler definition - realising that this part isn't as
mission-critical)
