As far as I know, puppetSound hasn't been deprecated. It's still 
appropriate in a lot of cases--short sound effects and the like. It's also 
good for a beginner getting her feet wet.

The sound commands give us a lot more control over audio--play lists, 
fades, playing portions of sounds, and the like--so personally I prefer to 
use them. PuppetSound remains a viable way of playing sound, so it seems 
logical that I would recommend a beginner familiarize herself with both 
methods.

Now, guys like you, with advanced skills--well, you get to choose your 
technique :-)

The new sound objects aren't hard to learn at all, so yes, I would 
recommend that any programmer get to know them.
