You're right, there are 8. Any of the sound commands has as a 
parameter the number of the channel you want to use. You would be 
best off using linked sound files and then just play the cast member 
in question, rather than using sound playfile and having to let 
Director know where the sound file is located.

For example:

puppetsound 5,"some music"

will play the file that is linked to the member named "some music", 
and will use channel 5.
