Never thought of testing the VoIP port. I did not think to try as we started from a point, where VoIP wasn't available at all.

Also, the customer insisted the provider said the telephone port on the box isn't configured - they might just have meant they don't provide VoIP service.

As to my configuration, "3" sold a fantastic little router into which you can plug a USB dongle.

Sorry, I am not sure of the Jargon.

They now have a 4G (previously WiMax) receiver and router (with Ethernet, a not
configured/supported VoiP port, and WiFi) built into one box.

The VoIP service is being provided by another provider, via the ethernet port,
on the device from the Internet provider.
It should certainly be possible to use the VoIP port on the router, even though
the VoIP service and basic internet access are provided by different ISPs.
Only one box should be required.

PS for many years, I have been using a USB 3G dongle plugged into a Router
which provides the ethernet and WiFi.
That's exactly what I've set up at Annandale. It took a little research
because most people just plug the dongle directly into a USB port on their
computer, which uses different 3G network-configuration variables. I was
surprised to find a 3G dongle uses the same Hayes AT-commands as an old dial-up
modem from long ago.
