thanks for the info richard! we used to do this quite a bit with our 3480s
and printers. you can also reassign the chpid on the mvs consoles, rather
that going through the hmc:
CF CHP(xx) OFF
CF CHP(xx) ON
as long as the paths have been previously varied offline, you shouldn't
have a problem. it's a little less risky this way. if you yank a chpid off
using the hmc, it pulls the rug out from mvs; if it's in use, too bad. if
you config it off using the mvs command, it will check to ensure it's not
in use first (more graceful).
if you have an sadump tape lying around, any chance of trying an ipl?

Subject: Re: ipling initial linux tape
No I didn't. I varied the devices and path offline and then configured
the chpid offline to the production lpar. I went to the H30's SE and
reassigned my chpid to the test lpar.
I have z/OS 1.4 running in the test lpar. I went to z/OS's master console
and configured the chpid online and then varied the path and devices
online. I did a "d u,,,mytapeaddress,16' and saw my tapes online. I
didn't actually run anything on the test lpar to allocate and use the
tapes.
