for ur m/c to be visible on the WINS server name resolution list, "nmbd" has to
register
ur IP addr and hostname with the WINS. so, check that the IP address assigned to
you
appears in the /etc/hosts file. If u r using RH disribution....and pump as the
DHCP client
then your /etc/hosts file is not updated with the IP address assigned to
you.........
nmbd checks this file for name registration purposes.....
so if there is an entry for ur IP addr and hostname ...its fine
else add an entry manually and restart the smb services........

krk

Subject: Re: [linux-delhi] Samba configuration

Hi there,
I gave my server a static ip and also added the appropriate entry in the
/etc/hosts
so now when I restart samba, it gives the status of nmb server and samba
server stop as ok, and then both the smb services and nmb services
starting ok. this solved.
But when I do smbstatus I get the message: Couldn't open status file
/var/lock/samba/STATUS..LCK . how do i resolve this?
The server is also not visible on the Network Neighbourhood of M$ Win xx
machines. Any pointers to that.

regards,
sanvir
