OK, two more things:

1) Run updatedb , and then do a locate STATUS..LCK . The fiel may eb
somewhere else.
2) Are you running smbd & nmbd through inetd, or standalone?  What is the
user smbd is running under?  May not have permissions
    to write in /var/lock/samba .  And is it /var/spool/samba or
/var/lock/samba ?

Of course, we can always blame RedHat ;-)  Supreet, over to you.
