This is now really getting a top FAQ:

It simply means no KISS support available in your kernel.
You just have to enable the support for the serial port KISS driver
under "Network devices" in "make menuconfig" (refer to the AX.25-
HOWTO (should be under /usr/doc/HOWTO) for further information).
