The simplest answer to your question is that for 2.2.X kernels like
that used in redhat 6.X, ax25 utils has been broken up into 4 bits
now. ax25-apps, ax25-utils, libax25 and node.
For redhat 6.X you need tdoewn laod these 4 and config, make,
make install and it a new system make installconf.
The old ax25-utils-2.1.42a will only work up to kernel 2.0.36.

F6FBB says you need 2.1.37b or greater. The package was split
up fior the 2.2.X series kernels so this si the version you need.
The how-to is very much out of date now.
So the process is
1) Rebuild and install the kernel with the requiored amateur stuff in it
2) Build and install the libax25, ax25 utils, ax25-apps, and node
3) Build and install F6FBB
