The problem it one of out of date documentation with the applications.
I have grabbed the required trees and am in the process of recompiling
my kernel with ax25 support. I am using kernel 2.2.10

Well, the answer is that for RedHat 6.1 you don't need ax25utils
anymore. All the programs you need for AX.25 operations are in
the ax25-tools, ax25-apps and libax25 packages.
Actually you don't even have to compile them, they are available
at the RedHat ftp server ftp://ftp.redhat.com in RPM form in the
powertools collection. If you have the deluxe version of RedHat 6.1,
they are on one of the CDs
