Hello,
I know this may be an old issue, but i did try searching through the
archives and was not able to find a solution. My software skill are
basic at best, so please don't flame me if this seems trivial to you.

I have RedHat 6.0 running on a 486-DX4 @ 100 Mhz. 24 Mb RAM. I also have
an external D-Link 33.6 kbps modem. I have created a ppp script using
netconf where i specified
my login name and password for my local isp viz goa1.dot.net.in

I also changed my domain name to suit my ego so that I login to "mario"
accordingly I changed my /etc/hosts file so that it read
127.0.0.1 mario mario

I use the foll command to connect to the internet,
#ifup ppp0

I also tried using minicom to connect to the net.
While I did get a login prompt from goatelecom.net (Same isp new name
????), which it accepted considering the fact that it did not indicate
any error such as wrong login or password, and did indicate that a ppp
conection was established and then put some garbage characters on my
screen, I was unable to ping any outside machine. And after a couple of
minutes I lost the carrier.

note that when using ifup, all of what i mentioned above may not be
happening as everything is done by the script. but after some time i can
hear my modem redialing so it is safe to assume that even when i use
ifup, I am losing the carrier and that is why the modem is redialling.

I know I am doing some thing wrong. Given that I am a beginner, could
any one please advise me on what steps are to be followed to connect to
an ISP. At present I can only connect to the internet from office where
everything is done by the sysadmin and i am forced to use win NT.

I can't seem to find wvdial, perhaps i did not install it. So if any
solutions would include wvdial, please advise me how to install and
configure it. Though I would prefer to use ifup. I also have not
installed kde or gnome coz of my rather modest hardware. I do use
Xwindows but i use Lesstif or fvwm2 window managers. Netscape is
installed.

Thank You,
Regards,
mario
