Yup....compiling your own kernel _does_ make things whizz faster....and you
certainly get a trim kernel rather than one that comes packaged with some
distro....And really, for good measure, it is fun.

Read the kernel-HOWTO at www.linuxdoc.org and go ahead. There are no
pitfalls and you always have the option of falling back to the older kernel
that you currently use.
